LogMeIn ReviewDownloadYou can download LogMeIn at http://www.logmein.comOverviewLogMeIn is a set of tools for remotely accessing computers over the internet, made by 3am labs.Features ReviewVNC and pcAnywhere are the hogwarts of remote access. In the old days if I wanted to access my computer remotely I would have to set up port forwarding, my firewall, an FTP server and my copy of Real VNC. Thankfully, those days are long gone. New services such as LogMeIn work through firewalls, and supoprt clients that work in web browsers (meaning you don't need to install software on each computer you intend to access your home computer from). The client comes in ActiveX, Java and HTML flavours. The HTML client is truly an amazing feat, I really reccomend trying accessing your computer as if it was a web page just for the experience. The ActiveX version and Java work well in internet explorer, though the Java client did have issues with my redundant version of firefox. The basic logmein version is free. It doesn't come with remote file access so you'll need to either email yourself files (a bit of a hassle) or set up some kind of synchronization or file server (also a bit of a hassle). Currently apart from the lack of file servers in the basic version the main issue is that LogMeIn wont work on old versions of Windows (98 and before) or Linux. However, seeing as 80% of computers are compatible this shouldn't be too major an issue - and you can always rever to VNC for those. One last thing; if you do have issues with your firewall try using Hamachi.cc to tunnel connections. |
